Course Codes

Every course offered at KUST is identified by a unique alpha-numeric code, usually three to four letters followed by three digits. The letters represent the major field. The first digit represents the level of the course (or the year in which the course is normally offered). For example; a course offered to the 3rd year students of a regular BS degree programme will carry the digit 3; the first year MSc/MA programme will also be assigned 3; MS/MPhil (graduate) programme will be assigned the digit 5 and 6; and the PhD level courses will carry 7 and 8. Sometimes no distinction is made in MPhil and PhD level courses. The second digit represents the broad area of the course. Each department classifies all the courses offered into broad areas. The digit 0 at this position normally refers to the basic introductory level general courses of the discipline. The third or the last digit stands for the sequence of the course offered in the same area in the same year.
