Academic Standing

At the end of each semester, based on the academic performance, students are awarded with different academic standings. Following is the list of the standings awarded to students:

Excellent

The academic standing of a student is considered excellent if he achieves a Semester-GPA greater than 3.49/4.00 with a Cumulative-GPA not less than 3.00. Name of the students with Excellent academic standing is kept on the Deans honour-list for that semester.

 

Good

The academic performance of a student is considered good if his Semester-GPA is between 3.00 and 3.49 and Cumulative GPA not less than 3.00.

Satisfactory

The academic performance of an Undergraduate student is considered satisfactory if his Semester-GPA is between 2.00 and 2.99 and Cumulative-GPA not less than 2.00. The minimum GPA requirement for the satisfactory performance of an MS/MPhil and PhD student is 2.50 and 3.00 respectively.

Caution

A cautionary letter is issued to an undergraduate student whose Semester-GPA is 2.00 (2.50 and 3.00 for MS/MPhil and PhD student) or more but Cumulative-GPA drops below this set point. The student is advised to improve his CGPA instead of proceeding for advanced courses to avoid getting into complication of not being allowed to repeat (see section 10.11 Repeating Courses).

 

Probation-z/Dismissed

For Undergraduate Programme, Degree Duration two (02) years or less, if a student is placed on probation due to poor academic performance in the first semester of the degree programme, he/ she must clear the probation in the succeeding regular semester (summer is not consider a regular semester) by securing a semester GPA of 2.00. Failing this he/ she will cease to be student of the programme.

 

If a student is placed on academic probation in a semester other than the first semester of the program and he/she could not clear his/her probation by securing a semester GPA of 2.00 in the succeeding regular semester, the following rules shall apply till he/she achieves a semester GPA of 2.00 as well as cumulative GPA of 2.00:

  1. he/she shall be stopped from registering new courses (not previously registered at KUST for the degree programme)
  2. he/she shall not be allowed to register more than (03) courses in the regular semester. This limit is set irrespective of the credit hours per course. A laboratory course, if considered co-requisite to a theory course, shall not be considered a separate course even if it has a separate course code.

 

For Undergraduate Programme, Degree Duration greater than 2 years, A student placed on academic probation in any semester during the first three regular semester of the degree programme must clear the probation in the succeeding regular semester by securing a semester GPA of 2.00. Failing this he/ she shall cease to be a student of the programme.

 

If a student is placed on academic probation during a semester other than the first three semesters of the program and he/she could not clear the probation by securing a semester GPA of 2.00 in the succeeding regular semester, the following rules shall apply till he/she achieves a semester GPA of 2.00 as well as cumulative GPA of 2.00:

  1. he/she shall be stopped from registering new courses (not previously registered at KUST for the degree programme)
  2. he/she shall be required to register for a maximum of three (03) courses (irrespective of the credit hours) in a regular semester. A laboratory course, if considered co-requisite to a theory course, shall not be considered a separate course even if it has a separate course code.

In case of graduate programme, the number of allowed probations is only ONE.
